Obituary

Gladys Malette, 80, slipped peacefully from this world into the presence of her Savior on Tuesday. She spent most of her life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula before moving to Butler in 2011.

She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to the late Ashley & Gladys Hiar. She graduated from Sault High School and married Francis J. (Frank) Malette on August 1, 1952 at First Church of Christ in Sault Ste. Marie. He passed away on November 28, 2010. They lived several places in Michigan as he was assigned various posts for the Michigan State Police, including Gladstone, Detroit, Manistique, Moran, and Dafter. After Frank's retirement, they lived for about 25 years outside DeTour Village. They helped to found the DeTour Christian Church Chapel in the Woods.

She was a talented artist, operating Benchmark Crafts where she displayed and sold her own paintings and craft items. She was an accomplished author, writing regular features for the Village Voice newspaper and having Vacation Bible School material published by Standard Publishing Company. She lived a life of volunteer service as a Girl Scout leader and Bible teacher for both children and adults in the churches she attended.

Surviving are three sons, Frank (Mary Ellen) Malette of Gwinn, MI, Steven (Marquita) Malette of DeTour Village, MI, and Peter (Cheryl) Malette of East Tawas, MI; two daughters, Ruth Rader and Lisa (Dale) Rabineau of Butler; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; five sisters, Wanda (Dick) Utecht of Omaha, NE, Virginia Lawton of Lucedale, MI, Shirley Adams of Crossville, TN, Judy Taracks of Alpena, MI and Terry (Bill) Lawmorie of Amboy, IL. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ashley Hiar, Jr, sister, Betty Petersen, and brothers-in-law, Albert Petersen, Charles Adams, and Dick Taracks.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 11 am at Christ's Church (127 W. Main Street Butler, IN) with Pastor Dale Rabineau officiating. A Memorial Service will be held at DeTour Village, MI at a later date with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township.
